Seven nights in a loop from Cherbourg and back. Head first to Cap de Carteret, on the Cotentin's west coast facing the Channel Islands, and to Coutances, whose cathedral tower can be seen from Jersey. Two nights follow near Mont-Saint-Michel, with Dior's childhood villa at Granville and the Mount's manuscripts at Avranches. Then three nights around Saint-Malo for the ramparts and the tidal islets, oysters at Cancale, Dinard's Belle Époque villas and the old streets of Dinan. The last night, on the way back, takes in the fortress of Fougères and the bell foundry at Villedieu-les-Poêles.

One night on the west coast of the Cotentin. Walk the Sentier des Douaniers round Cap de Carteret, looking out to the Channel Islands, to the ruined church of Saint Germain the Scot and the Hatainville dunes; at Portbail, cross the 13-arch bridge. Coutances cathedral, built from 1210 to 1274, came through the bombing of 1944 almost unscathed: stand under its octagonal lantern tower, more than 57m high. On the coast to the west, the Second Empire lime kilns at Regnéville are now a maritime museum, and the dunes of the Pointe d'Agon close the Sienne estuary.

Cap de Carteret: The Customs Officers' Path, the Hatainville Dunes and Portbail
225 XPWalk the 9.8 km circuit du cap on the customs officers' path, which has watched the Channel Islands traffic since the end of the 18th century: from Carteret beach up to 64 m at the cape and 71 m on the corniche at la Roche-Biard, round to the beach of the Vieille Église, picking out Jersey off the Passage de la Déroute on the way

Two nights between Granville and the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Climb through the village inside the ramparts to the abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and its Gothic Merveille, and stop for an omelette at La Mère Poulard. The tide here can range by up to 14m; cross the sands from Genêts at low tide, with an authorised guide. In Granville, visit Les Rhumbs, the cliff-top villa where Christian Dior grew up, now the Musée Christian Dior, and walk the ramparts of the upper town. Avranches shows the abbey's manuscripts at the Scriptorial.

Granville: The Monaco of the North and Christian Dior's Villa
200 XPWork through the Dior collection in the villa Les Rhumbs, the only museum in France carrying the « musée de France » label for a single couturier, and find the winter garden Dior's mother Madeleine had imagined for the house

Mont-Saint-Michel: The Abbey, the Bay and the Walk Across the Sands
400 XPClimb the steep stair called the Gouffre into the abbey's salle des Gardes, then work round the Merveille on the north side to stand under its eastern gable and the tapering tour des Corbins, and pick out the gilded Saint Michael on the spire 157.10 m above the shore

Avranches: The Manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel and the Skull of Saint Aubert
225 XPIn the Scriptorial, work through the display of the abbey's library — more than 200 medieval volumes — and find the copies in which the Mont's monks were reading translations of Aristotle, Boethius, Cicero and Plato

Three nights around Saint-Malo. Walk the 1.8km of granite ramparts round the old walled city, then wait for low tide to cross to the Grand Bé, where Chateaubriand is buried, and to Fort National on the next islet; the castle museum tells the story of corsairs such as Surcouf. Eat oysters by the Port de la Houle in Cancale and walk out to the Pointe du Grouin. In Dinard, walk the Promenade du Clair de Lune and look up at the Belle Époque villas above the sea. Dinan's rampart walk is still intact for 2,600m, and the cobbled Rue du Jerzual is lined with half-timbered houses.

Saint-Malo: The Corsairs' Ramparts and the Grand Bé
300 XPWalk the whole 1,754 m circuit of the ramparts, counting the nine gates you pass over, and look inwards as you go: the walls came through the American bombardment of August 1944 almost untouched, and the town inside them was rebuilt afterwards in an old style but not stone for stone, so almost everything below you is younger than the wall you are standing on

Cancale: Oysters by the Port de la Houle and the Pointe du Grouin
200 XPAt the stalls on the Port de la Houle, buy a dozen flat oysters and a dozen cupped ones and eat them side by side on the slipway: the flat ones are the oysters that won Cancale its town charter from François I in 1545, when the aldermen of Paris had them delivered twice a week, and the biggest wild ones were known as pieds de cheval, horses' hooves

Dinard: The Promenade du Clair de Lune and the Belle Époque Villas
200 XPWalk the Promenade du Clair de Lune from the Plage du Prieuré to the landing stage at the Bec de la Vallée, and stop at the cut faces along it to find the banded Saint-Malo migmatites — rock caught halfway between the gneiss it started as and the granite it was melting into

Dinan: The Ramparts, the Rue du Jerzual and the Heart of Du Guesclin
250 XPWalk the 2,600 m of rampart walk round the old town and name the nine towers as you pass them — Beaumanoir, Vaucouleurs, Saint-Julien, Beaufort, du Connétable, de Coëtquen, Penthièvre, Longue and Sainte-Catherine — and find all five gates, including the Porte Saint-Louis cut through in 1620

One last night on the way back, before the crossing home. The château of Fougères, with three walls and 13 towers, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe to survive in this state; look down on it from the public garden by Saint-Léonard, and find the belfry, the oldest in Brittany. At Villedieu-les-Poêles, the Cornille-Havard foundry has worked in almost the same way since 1865, and you can ring the bells in its courtyard. The roofless abbey of Hambye, founded around 1145, keeps 13th-century frescoes in its parlour.

Fougères: One of France's Most Imposing Fortresses, the Oldest Belfry in Brittany and the Public Garden
225 XPWalk all three enceintes of the château and date the towers by their shape: the earliest are square, the later ones round, and the horseshoe towers were built against the bases of others to give the crossbowmen room to swing. Then look at the stone itself — dressed granite for the corners, local schist rubble for the walls

Villedieu-les-Poêles and Hambye: The Copper Town, the Bell Foundry and the Ruined Abbey
225 XPTake the guided tour of the Cornille-Havard foundry and find the two furnaces they still use: the wood-and-coal double-vaulted reverberatory furnace of 1865 for the big castings and the 1950s one for small bells, with the clay moulds and the casting pit between them. Ask which bell was last poured — this is the workshop that cast the 1.1-tonne peace bell for Bayeux and the bells of Notre-Dame
