Dinard: The Promenade du Clair de Lune and the Belle Époque Villas
200 + 100 XP
Dinard became a favourite resort of the British and Americans, starting when the American William Faber built houses on the Pointe du Moulinet, the « petites terrasses », and sold them to his English-speaking friends from Dinan; after his death in 1854 his widow Lyona carried on selling plots to the same circle and gave the land for the Anglican church of Saint Bartholomew. The town is famous for its listed villas of the 1900s and 1910s and has held its British and Irish film festival every year since 1989, now in early October. The concrete Promenade du Clair de Lune, laid out in the 1930s from the Plage du Prieuré to the landing stage at the Bec de la Vallée, was the town's answer to the Côte d'Azur.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk the Promenade du Clair de Lune from the Plage du Prieuré to the landing stage at the Bec de la Vallée, and stop at the cut faces along it to find the banded Saint-Malo migmatites — rock caught halfway between the gneiss it started as and the granite it was melting into
2
of 4
Walk round the Pointe du Moulinet and find two things the British colony left on it: the first seaside villa in Dinard, built for James Erhart Coppinger in 1858 and later known as the Villa Castel Mond, and the Anglican church of Saint Bartholomew, on land Lyona Faber gave for it
3
of 4
Hunt down three named villas: the Bric-à-Brac of 1865 facing the baie du Prieuré, said to be named for its improbable architecture, the château des Deux-Rives on the Moulinet built by Count Rochaïd-Dahdad, who also paid for the town's streets, its covered market and its station, and the villa Monplaisir, which is now the town hall
4
of 4
Follow the coast path from the Prieuré round to Port-Blanc, counting the smaller unguarded beaches on the way — la Malouine, Port-Riou, Notre-Dame-du-Roc — and on the plage de l'Écluse, once called the plage des Élégantes, work out where the 1858 bathing establishment stood on its wooden stilts
