Mont-Saint-Michel: The Abbey, the Bay and the Walk Across the Sands
400 + 100 XP
The Benedictine abbey on its rock at Mont-Saint-Michel, with the Gothic Merveille on its north side, stands over a bay that has the largest tides in continental Europe — up to fifteen metres between low and high water. The islet and the coastal strip of the bay have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979, and a statue of Saint Michael on the abbey church's spire stands 157.10 m above the shore. Below it the Grand-Rue climbs 200 m to the abbey inside the ramparts, past the house Tiphaine Raguenel lived in from 1366. At low tide walkers still cross the sands barefoot from the Bec d'Andaine at Genêts with an authorised guide.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Climb the steep stair called the Gouffre into the abbey's salle des Gardes, then work round the Merveille on the north side to stand under its eastern gable and the tapering tour des Corbins, and pick out the gilded Saint Michael on the spire 157.10 m above the shore
2
of 4
Cross the bay barefoot with an authorised guide from the Bec d'Andaine at Genêts, 14 km on the sands, and find the places where the guide stops to show you quicksand and the channels of the Sée and the Sélune
3
of 4
Walk the whole 200 m of the Grand-Rue from the Porte du Roi to the abbey steps and find three of its named houses — the corbelled maison de l'Arcade, the maison de l'Artichaut, and the logis of Tiphaine Raguenel of 1366 with the Romanesque doorway beside it — then come back down along the ramparts

At the entrance to La Mère Poulard, watch the beaters in traditional dress whip the eggs in rhythm in a big copper bowl, then see the omelettes cooked in long-handled pans over a wood fire — the dish Annette Poulard was already famous for in Le Figaro in 1884, in the house her family rebuilt in 1888

Before you go
Never cross the bay without an authorised guide — the tide comes in fast and there is quicksand. The Genets crossing must be booked: it is 14 km, about six hours, walked barefoot, and jeans are not advised. The abbey is open 9am to 7pm from 1 May to 31 August and 9.30am to 6pm from 1 September to 30 April, and is closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
