Dinan: The Ramparts, the Rue du Jerzual and the Heart of Du Guesclin

easy
history

250 + 100 XP

Dinan stands 75m above the Rance, and its rampart walk, still intact for 2,600m, is pierced by the gates of the Jerzual, Saint-Malo, Brest and Le Guichet, with the Porte Saint-Louis added in 1620. In 1357 Bertrand Du Guesclin and his brother Olivier held the town against an English siege, and Du Guesclin beat Thomas of Canterbury in single combat; the tomb of his heart is in the basilica of Saint-Sauveur, whose spire reaches 60m. Half-timbered houses line the cobbled Rue du Jerzual, and the late 15th-century Tour de l'Horloge, a belfry since Anne of Brittany's letters patent of 1507, stands over the centre.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Walk the 2,600 m of rampart walk round the old town and name the nine towers as you pass them — Beaumanoir, Vaucouleurs, Saint-Julien, Beaufort, du Connétable, de Coëtquen, Penthièvre, Longue and Sainte-Catherine — and find all five gates, including the Porte Saint-Louis cut through in 1620

2

of 5

Climb the Tour de l'Horloge to its circular platform for the view over the roofs, and on the way find the Duchesse Anne, the hour bell recast in 1905 from the metal of the 1507 bell that Anne of Brittany stood godmother to, in the third belfry any Breton town was granted after Rennes and Fougères

3

of 5

In the right transept of Saint-Sauveur, find the tomb of Du Guesclin's heart — a 14th-century engraved slab set inside the heavier gilded granite tomb built round it in the 18th century — the box holding the remains of his first wife Tiphaine Raguenel beside it, and the three recumbent effigies of Rolland de Dinan, Guillaume de Lesquen and Berthelot d'Angoulevent

4

of 5

Walk the rue du Jerzual from the gate in the wall all the way down the 75 m to the port on the Rance, the river route that carried Dinan's cloth and goods to Saint-Malo, counting the half-timbered houses on the cobbles

5

of 5

At the castle, go into the Tour Coëtquen, built for artillery, where seven recumbent effigies stood until the damp drove them out to Saint-Sauveur and Saint-Malo, and find the motte that the Normans of Duke William besieged in 1064 — the assault that appears on the Bayeux Tapestry

  • Walk the 2,600 m of rampart walk round the old town and name the nine towers as you pass them — Beaumanoir, Vaucouleurs, Saint-Julien, Beaufort, du Connétable, de Coëtquen, Penthièvre, Longue and Sainte-Catherine — and find all five gates, including the Porte Saint-Louis cut through in 1620

Before you go

The Tour de l'Horloge opens 1 April to 31 May in the afternoons and 1 June to 30 September from the morning, and is shut the rest of the year. The ramparts are not continuously walkable: a section collapsed onto the rue du Général-de-Gaulle on the night of 6 to 7 June 2007 and parts have needed consolidation since. The rue du Jerzual drops 75 m to the port and is steep and cobbled, hard going on the way back up.
