Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: Glanum and Van Gogh's Asylum

At the foot of the Alpilles outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence lie the ruins of Glanum, a Gallo-Roman town, with the Mausoleum of the Julii and the triumphal arch known together as Les Antiques. Next to it, the monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole was the asylum where Vincent van Gogh painted in 1889–90, and its garden is still there. Paths climb into the Alpilles towards Mont Gaussier.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Across the road from the Glanum ticket office, where you can see them for nothing, read the north face of the Julii cenotaph — SEX.M.L.IVLIEI.C.F.PARENTIBVS.SVEIS, three brothers to their forebears — and pick out the battle of Zela on three sides of its base and the boar hunt on the fourth; then on the municipal arch beside it find the seated woman on a heap of captured arms and the Gaulish prisoner with his hands tied behind his back

2

of 4

At Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, go up to the floor above the cloister gallery where the paying patients' rooms were, and find the reconstruction of the bedroom and the studio — two of the three rooms Theo rented for his brother from 3 May 1889 to 16 May 1890, 53 weeks in which Vincent produced 143 oils and more than a hundred drawings — then come down into the Romanesque cloister, whose north and east galleries went up about 1140-1150, and find the 14th-century tomb in it

3

of 4

From the Glanum car park, climb the rock defile that runs up behind the site to the 307 m summit of Mont Gaussier, and from the top locate the ruins of Glanum below you, the two Antiques standing beside the D5, and the Barrage des Peirou in the valley to the north-west

Before you go

Glanum closes on Mondays from October to March and on 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November and 25 December; winter hours are 10am to 5pm. Les Antiques stand outside the paying site, beside the D5, and can be seen any time for nothing. Saint-Paul-de-Mausole is still part of a working psychiatric hospital: only the church, the cloister and the museum floor are open, and the rest is private. Mont Gaussier ends in bare rock with exposed drops and is not a walk for small children or for hot afternoons.
