Roussillon, Sénanque and Gordes: Ochre, a Cistercian Abbey and the Lavender Museum

easy

Roussillon stands on an ochre ridge whose quarries were worked from the end of the 18th century and employed a thousand people until 1930. North of Gordes, in the narrow valley of the Sénancole, the Cistercian abbey of Sénanque was founded on 23 June 1148 and is still occupied by a community of six monks. At Coustellet the Musée de la Lavande has been devoted to the fine lavender of Provence since 1991.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Walk the long circuit of the Sentier des Ocres at Roussillon, the 60-minute of the two waymarked loops through the abandoned quarries, and pick out the eroded pinnacles known as the aiguilles des fées standing above the ochre face called the chaussée des géants

2

of 4

Drive down the hairpins of the D177 north of Gordes to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, founded on 23 June 1148 and still worked by a community of six Cistercian monks, and inside find the chapter house with the tiered stone benches the monks sat on, and the cloister galleries whose arcades rest on capitals carved with water leaves

3

of 4

Photograph Gordes from the terrace below the Renaissance château (rebuilt 1525 on an 11th-century base) looking south over the dry-stone borie-dotted Luberon valley

4

of 4

In the Musée de la Lavande at Coustellet, founded in 1991 by the distiller Georges Lincelé, work along the line of copper stills from the 17th century to the present and find the Roue Garnier of 1902, then smell true fine lavender against the cheaper lavandin in the shop

Before you go

The Musée de la Lavande at Coustellet opens 1 April to 23 December and is shut through January, February and March. The Sentier des Ocres charges admission, closes on 25 December and 1 January and for a few days in January and February, and shuts in heavy rain or thunderstorms; the ochre dust stains light shoes and clothing.

Sénanque is a working monastery: only part of it is open, and the lavender field in front of the church is in flower for a few weeks in high summer only. The approach road, the D177A, is a narrow single-track descent with hairpins and is poor ground for a long motorhome.
