Two days on foot in the city. The Long Room holds the Book of Kells and the Brian Boru Harp, the National Museum on Kildare Street has the most significant collection of Iron Age bog bodies in the world, and the Medieval Mile runs from the last of the city gates to Christ Church.

Newgrange was built around 3100 BC, before Stonehenge and the pyramids. From the Hill of Slane you can see Tara, which is the whole point of Patrick's fire story, and Muiredach's Cross at Monasterboice is reckoned the finest high cross in Ireland.

Kilkenny kept its medieval street plan, and the Medieval Mile runs from the castle to St Canice's. The annals place a Viking massacre at Dunmore Cave in 928, and Jerpoint's cloister is carved with knights, bishops and saints.

Brian Boru was crowned on the Rock in 977. Down the Suir, Cahir Castle still has a culverin ball from Essex's siege of 1599 lodged in its wall, the Swiss Cottage is a rich family's idea of a peasant's house, and Athassel, the largest medieval priory in Ireland, has no ticket desk and usually nobody else.

The Waterford Greenway runs 46 km on the old Dungarvan railway, and the western half from Kilmacthomas, over the Durrow Viaduct and through the Ballyvoyle Tunnel, is the best of it. William Marshal founded Tintern after surviving a storm crossing, and Elizabeth I built the star fort at Duncannon against the Armada.
