Four nights in a loop from Roscoff and back through Finistère. The first two are on the Crozon peninsula, where the cliffs of Pen-Hir face the six stacks of the Tas de Pois and Camaret has its orange Tour Vauban. The same two nights take in the sardine port of Douarnenez, the granite square of Locronan and the view from the top of the Ménez-Hom. Then comes the forest of Huelgoat, with the 137-tonne Roche Tremblante among its granite boulders, and the high moors of the Monts d'Arrée. The last night is on the Bay of Morlaix, for the Cairn of Barnenez, the Château du Taureau on its rock, the Kreisker spire at Saint-Pol-de-Léon and Roscoff's onion sellers.

Two nights between Crozon and Locronan. Walk out to the Pointe de Pen-Hir, count the six stacks of the Tas de Pois and find the granite cross to the Bretons of the Free French. In Camaret, walk the rows of the Lagatjar standing stones, re-erected in 1927–1928, and find the Tour Vauban, coated in crushed brick and open inside from June to September. Give the second day to Douarnenez: the Port-musée's boats in the harbour, then tins from the Chancerelle shop, which has packed sardines by hand since 1853. Finish on Locronan's granite square and the 329m summit of the Ménez-Hom.

275 XPWalk out to the Pointe de Pen-Hir above 70m of cliff and pick off the six Tas de Pois from the landward one outwards - Grand Dahouet, Petit Dahouet, Penn-Glaz, Chelott, Ar Forc'h and Bern-Id; then find the Croix de Pen-Hir, cut from blue Brennilis granite for the Bretons of the Free French, and read the Breton motto on the back of it, Kentoc'h mervel eget em zaotra, rather death than dishonour

One night at Huelgoat, where a river runs through a chaos of granite boulders in the forest. Climb down into the Grotte du Diable beneath them, then find the Roche Tremblante: the 137-tonne stone still rocks if you push it in the right place. Go looking for Le Champignon, and walk through the forest to the Camp d'Artus, the Iron Age hillfort of the Osismii. To the west, climb the Roc'h Trévézel, at 385 metres one of the two highest points of the Monts d'Arrée, and look out over the moors where the Yeun Elez marsh was said to hold the gates of hell.

One night by the Bay of Morlaix, the last before the crossing home. The Cairn of Barnenez was piled up from about 4850 BC: walk its 72m length and count the entrances to its 11 passage chambers. Take the boat from Carantec or Plougasnou to the Château du Taureau, the island fort begun in 1542 and later a prison. At Saint-Pol-de-Léon, look up at the 78m Kreisker spire and find the carved choir stalls in the old cathedral. Back in Roscoff, the Maison des Johnnies tells of the onion sellers who crossed to Britain; buy AOP pink onions, then climb the rock in the Jardin Exotique.

Bay of Morlaix: The Barnenez Cairn, the Bull Fort and Roscoff's Onion Johnnies
275 XPWalk round the Cairn of Barnenez, 75 m long and 28 m across at its widest, and count the entrances to its eleven passage graves, then look at the quarried west face, where a contractor's excavator cut open chambers A to D in the spring of 1955 and left the inside of the cairn on show

Saint-Pol-de-Léon: The Kreisker Spire and the Cathedral of the Léon
200 XPFrom the square, read the Kreisker tower in its parts: forty metres of solid tower to the open gallery, then thirty-eight metres of pierced spire above it, with four sixteen-metre pinnacles at the corners — and know that its model, Notre-Dame-du-Mur at Morlaix, was pulled down in 1806, a year before Napoleon's decree saved this one
