Eight nights through the volcanoes of Auvergne, from the Chaîne des Puys west of Clermont-Ferrand to Le Puy-en-Velay. It starts with the rack railway up the Puy de Dôme and the double crater of Puy de Pariou. The Sancy follows, with the castle of Murol, Lac Chambon and Lac Pavin, the crater lake of the youngest volcano in mainland France. In the Cantal, cross the Pas de Peyrol below the Puy Mary and climb the Plomb du Cantal, high point of the largest stratovolcano visible in Europe. Saint-Flour stands on its basalt plateau, with Eiffel's Garabit viaduct over the Truyère close by. The trip ends at Le Puy-en-Velay, with its pilgrims' cathedral and the chapel of Saint-Michel on top of a volcanic plug.

Two nights by the Chaîne des Puys, the line of volcanoes west of Clermont-Ferrand, UNESCO-listed since 2018. Hike the rim of Puy de Pariou's double crater, and walk the twin cones of Puy de la Vache and Puy de Lassolas on the same paths. Ride the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway to the summit of the Puy de Dôme at 1,465m, where the ruins of a 2nd-century Temple of Mercury stand near a monument to Pascal's barometer experiment of 1648. Tandem paragliding flights with a qualified pilot launch from its slopes. At Saint-Ours-les-Roches, Vulcania is a park about the region's volcanoes.

The Puy de Dôme: Paragliding, the Rack Railway and the Temple of Mercury
400 XPTake a tandem paragliding flight off the Puy de Dôme with a qualified pilot, and from the air pick out the line of cones and craters of the Chaîne des Puys running north and south below you, and the step of the Limagne fault dropping away east towards Clermont — the pair of them made this a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018

The Chaîne des Puys: Pariou, La Vache and Lassolas
300 XPClimb the 555 oak steps up the east flank of the Puy de Pariou and walk the full rim of the young crater — an almost perfect circle 200 m wide and 90 m deep — then look west and north for the older crater and its tuff ring set at a different angle underneath it, the reason Pariou is compared to Vesuvius

Two nights in the Sancy. Take the cable car from Mont-Dore towards the Puy de Sancy and walk to the summit, at 1,885m the highest point of the Massif Central. Look for chamois on the crags of the Vallée de Chaudefour, and walk round Lac Pavin, a crater lake formed 6,900 years ago and at 92m the deepest in Auvergne. The castle of Murol stands on a table of basalt where three Roman roads met, with a Romanesque chapel and a Renaissance palace. Below it, Lac Chambon, formed when the Tartaret volcano blocked the river, has two beaches for swimming and water sports in summer.

Murol and Lac Chambon: The Castle on the Basalt and the Lake Dammed by a Volcano
225 XPFrom the ramparts at nearly a thousand metres, work out why anyone built here: the castle sits on the stump of a basalt flow, a mesa, right where three old Roman roads crossed — towards the Limagne, towards Le Mont-Dore and towards Clermont-Ferrand — and you can still pick out all three valleys from the top

Sancy, Chaudefour and Lac Pavin: Chamois, the Highest Summit and the Youngest Volcano
450 XPWalk up the glacial trough of Chaudefour with binoculars and try for all three of its introduced mammals — mouflon, put into this valley from 1956, marmots from 1959, and chamois, which were released in the Cantal in 1978 and walked here on their own — then find the iron-red mineral spring bubbling gas out of the valley floor, with the dent de la Rancune above you

Two nights in the Cantal. The road over the Pas de Peyrol, 1,589m, is the highest pass in the Massif Central; from it a path and steps climb the Puy Mary, 1,783m, with seven glacial valleys radiating below. Below lies Salers, with its Renaissance mansions of black basalt; taste its AOP cheese, made only in summer from raw milk, and look for the mahogany Salers cows. The Plomb du Cantal, 1,855m, is the high point of the largest stratovolcano visible in Europe. Walk up from Prat de Bouc to the triple watershed, where the Cère, the Brezons and the Alagnon run to the Dordogne, the Garonne and the Loire.

One night near Saint-Flour, a town in two storeys. The upper town stands at 900m on the Planèze, the great volcanic plateau of the Cantal. Go into the cathedral of Saint-Pierre, look out over the plateau, then find the basalt organ pipes on the road down to the lower town. The Garabit viaduct, built by Gustave Eiffel's company in 1880–1884, carries the railway 122m above the Truyère and was the highest viaduct in the world when it opened. Boat trips on the Lac de Grandval leave from Garabit from May to October, and the ruined 13th-century castle of Alleuze stands on its rock above the lake.

Saint-Flour: The Highest Cathedral in Europe and the Black Christ
200 XPStand on the parvis at 882 m, the highest cathedral forecourt in Europe, and read the inscription over the door that dates the façade to 1466 and names the two Montgon brothers, both bishops of Saint-Flour, who paid for it. Inside, walk the 65 metres from door to apse through five narrow naves and work out what is missing — like Blois and Bourges, this cathedral has no transept at all — then put your hand on the wall and see that the whole thing is black lava quarried at Liozargues

Garabit: Eiffel's Viaduct over the Truyère and the Castle of Alleuze
225 XPFrom the viewpoints on both sides of the gorge, count the seven puddled-iron piers — the two tallest are 80 m — and pick out the three central bays that make up the 165 m arch, 52 m high, over the deepest part of the valley. The whole thing is held together by 678,768 rivets, and the paint is a specific colour: rouge Gauguin, put on between 1992 and 1998

One night at Le Puy-en-Velay, a gathering point for pilgrims to Santiago since the 10th century. Climb the stairway to the cathedral of Notre-Dame du Puy for the Black Madonna, the frescoes of about 1200 and the multicoloured stone of the cloister. Then climb the 268 steps up an 85m volcanic plug to the chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, built in 969. On another plug, climb 262 steps inside the 22.7m statue of Notre-Dame de France, cast from 213 cannons taken at Sevastopol, to its crown.
