The Chaîne des Puys: Pariou, La Vache and Lassolas
300 + 100 XP
The Chaîne des Puys is a line of volcanoes west of Clermont-Ferrand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018. Puy de Pariou rises 1,209 m, 250 m above the plain, and holds two craters nested one inside the other, the younger an almost perfect circle 200 m across and 90 m deep. To the south, Puy de la Vache and Puy de Lassolas are twin breached cones 8,400 years old — the youngest volcanoes in the range — whose joint lava flow ran fifteen kilometres to the south-east and dammed the valleys that hold the lakes of Aydat and la Cassière. At Saint-Ours-les-Roches, Vulcania is a park about the region's volcanoes.
Required Activities
1
of 3
Climb the 555 oak steps up the east flank of the Puy de Pariou and walk the full rim of the young crater — an almost perfect circle 200 m wide and 90 m deep — then look west and north for the older crater and its tuff ring set at a different angle underneath it, the reason Pariou is compared to Vesuvius
2
of 3
Walk up between Puy de la Vache and Puy de Lassolas and see that both cones are open on the south side: the lava came out while the cinders were still falling and carried them away like a conveyor belt, so the craters never closed. Look at the colour of the scoria under your boots — red where the crater heat oxidised it, black where it did not — and follow the chaotic surface of the cheire d'Aydat away to the south-east
3
of 3
Walk down off the cheire to the lac d'Aydat, in the valley of the Veyre, and work out from the shoreline where the lava that stopped the river came to rest — the same flow dammed the lac de la Cassière to the north

Before you go
Vulcania is open from late March to 1 November only, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays from early September to mid-October, so a winter or early-spring trip is the two volcanoes on their own. On the Pariou, stay on the made paths and on the rim: the old path down into the crater was closed in 2021 and removed in 2022 because 130,000 walkers a year were destroying the soil. Park at the Fontaine du Berger or the col des Goules, not on the verges.
