Amboise: The Royal Château and Leonardo's Tomb
250 + 100 XP
Charles VIII rebuilt Amboise from 1492, and after 1495 brought in Italian builders who gave it some of the first Renaissance decoration in France; he died here in 1498 after hitting his head on a door lintel. In 1560 a Huguenot plot against the Guise family was put down with hangings that took a month. Most of the château was demolished later, though the walls and towers have been restored and the Chapel of Saint-Hubert survives, and in it is a stone marked LEONARDO DA VINCI over bones believed to be his — he was buried in 1519 in the collegiate church of Saint-Florentin, inside the same château walls, which was razed at the end of the 18th century. From 1848 the Algerian leader Abd al-Qadir was held here as a prisoner.
Required Activities
1
of 6
Find Leonardo's grave in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, then walk out to the bust of him on the terrace, standing on the footprint of the collegiate church of Saint-Florentin where he was actually buried in 1519 — the bones under the chapel slab are the ones Arsène Houssaye dug out of that site in 1863 and had moved here in 1874
2
of 6
Walk up the inside of the tour des Minimes or the tour Heurtault — hollow cavalier towers built round a gentle spiral ramp so that coaches and teams could be driven from the town straight up onto the terraces, as Charles V was when he visited — and come out on the terrace above the Loire
3
of 6
Stand at the balustrades along the terrace, where most of the Amboise conspirators were hanged in the days after the failed attack of 17 March 1560 while the court watched
4
of 6
Walk the jardin d'Orient on the south-east side of the terraces, laid out by Rachid Koraïchi in 2005 for the emir Abd el-Kader's companions who died in captivity here, and find the alley aligned on Mecca that cuts across the line of stelae
5
of 6
In the Antichambre de la Cordelière, read the fireplace: Anne of Brittany's arms ringed by the interlaced cords of her order and the collar of Saint-Michel, with Francis I's salamander on the wood panel above
6
of 6
Before going in to the chapel, read the doorway: the lintel carries the hunt of Saint Hubert, cut in white tuffeau by Flemish sculptors between 1491 and 1496, and the tympanum above it — 19th-century work — shows Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany

Before you go
The château is open all year apart from 25 December and 1 January, but from 2 November to 17 December it shuts over the middle of the day, 12.30pm to 2pm, and closes at 5pm — arriving at midday in late autumn gets you nothing. Over the Christmas fortnight, from 18 to 24 December and 26 to 31 December, it runs straight through 9am to 5pm; March is 9am to 5pm and then 6pm from 27 March, and August runs to 7pm. January and February keep a shorter timetable again, so look up the day on chateau-amboise.com. Leonardo's tomb is in the chapelle Saint-Hubert inside the ticketed enclosure, not in the town, so the château has to be open for that part of the challenge.
