Cheverny: Moulinsart and a Pack of a Hundred Hounds

Cheverny was built for Henri Hurault, son of Philippe Hurault, chancellor of France, and for his wife Marguerite Gaillard de la Morinière: the old fortress was pulled down at the start of the 1630s and the new house finished in 1634, to designs by Jacques Bougier, called Boyer de Blois, who had worked on a wing of the château de Blois and died soon after the work began. It is still the home of Philippe's descendants, the marquises de Vibraye — though the family lost it, it was sold in 1755, and it came back to a Hurault, Anne-Victor, marquis de Vibraye, only in 1825. The marquis opened it to the public in 1922, with the interiors still furnished. Hergé used it for Moulinsart — Marlinspike Hall in the English Tintin books — taking off the two end pavilions. It also keeps a pack of about a hundred hunting hounds in kennels of 1850 in the grounds, one of the last packs in France kept for mounted hunting.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Stand in front of the south façade and work out which two end pavilions Hergé left off Moulinsart, then look at what the front is made of — pierre de Bourré, a tuffeau from a village down the road that whitens and hardens as it weathers, which is why the façade is this colour — and count the Roman emperors' busts set into it

2

of 5

In the dining room, work along Jean Mosnier's 34 painted wooden panels telling the story of Don Quixote, then look down at the chairs, which run on castors made of horn, and at the walls hung with Cordoba leather; upstairs in the Chambre du Roi find the eight tapestries woven about 1640 from Simon Vouet's designs for the labours of Ulysses — six in the room and two more out on the landing

3

of 5

Find Henry IV's travelling chest, covered in Cordoba leather with the arms of France and Navarre

4

of 5

Get to the kennels of 1850 for the soupe des chiens and watch a hundred hounds hold off a meal laid out in front of them until they are called; then pick out the two breeds in the cross they come from, the English fox hound and the French Poitevin, in the markings of the anglo-français tricolore

5

of 5

Go up into the forage lofts for the Tintin rooms, where the interiors of Moulinsart have been rebuilt as sets with models and sound, and find the trompe-l'œil panels lifted straight out of the books; then match each reconstructed room against the real one you walked through in the château below

Before you go

The soupe des chiens is at 11.30, every day of the year except in winter on Tuesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays — so build the morning round it rather than hoping to catch it. Cheverny is the second busiest privately owned château on the Loire, so come early or late in the day in high season. The family still lives here, so parts of the house are closed and photography rules are theirs to set.

The soupe des chiens is at 11.30, so plan the morning around it; in winter it runs on fewer days of the week, so check the day before you set out. This is the second most visited privately owned château on the Loire after Chenonceau, which means coaches and queues in the middle of the day in high summer — the first hour after opening is the quiet one. The family still lives in part of the house, so not every room is open.
