The Alsace Wine Route: Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé

The Route des Vins d'Alsace runs south along the foot of the Vosges through walled villages of timber and flowers. Burkhardt II of Horbourg walled Riquewihr in 1291 with three gates and a deep ditch, and the north and west walls still stand along with the Dolder gate tower and the Thieves' Tower. Ribeauvillé, up the road, grew under the castles of the lords of Ribeaupierre. Between them the slope carries one grand cru after another: the Schoenenbourg above Riquewihr and Zellenberg, then the Osterberg, the Kirchberg and the Geisberg above Ribeauvillé.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Walk the surviving north and west walls of Riquewihr, a rectangle of only 300 m by 220 m, and climb the five storeys of the Dolder — twenty-five metres, and its name means the highest point in Alsatian — to the museum on three of its floors, where the weapons run from the 15th to the 17th century and the rest is the tools of the wine trade

2

of 4

Taste a riesling from the Schoenenbourg in a Riquewihr cellar, then walk out of the walls and up the slope it comes off — steep, facing due south, between 270 and 380 m, on gypsum-bearing Keuper marl — and note that every grand cru bunch in Alsace has to be picked by hand, which is why the rows are the width they are

3

of 4

Walk up through the vines above Ribeauvillé to the three castles of the lords of Ribeaupierre and name all three on the ground — Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre — which are protected not separately but as one group, listed in 1841 and again in 1930

4

of 4

Find your way into the Tour des Voleurs at Riquewihr through the cour des Juifs and up the old stair on the rampart, and go down into the town's gaol with its oubliettes and its torture room — then remember what the townspeople asked their lord for in 1484: that they should not be shut in here any more, and that it be kept for outsiders

Before you go

Riquewihr's Christmas market runs for several weeks from late November to just before Christmas, but Ribeauvillé's medieval market is only two weekends in early December — four days — so check its dates before you travel for it.

Entry to the Ribeauvillé market is free, but do not try to drive in: use the park-and-ride at Bergheim on the route de Colmar, with shuttles every twenty minutes from just before 10am until late, and a shuttle line that links Colmar, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé so you can do both villages without the car. The municipal campsite takes motorhomes over the market weekends. Both villages are walled and cobbled, with no vehicle access to the centre on market days.
