The Grande Corniche and Èze: The High Road Above the Riviera
250 + 100 XP
Three corniche roads run east from the port of Nice above the Riviera to the Italian border at Menton, merging at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, and the highest of them, the Grande Corniche, crosses the col des Quatre-Chemins and the col d'Èze on its way. The village of Èze sits on a cone of rock at 429m between the corniches, with an exotic garden of cactus and succulents planted in the ruins of its castle at the top, above the village cemetery. The steep path down to the shore at Èze-sur-Mer carries Friedrich Nietzsche's name, and local tradition has him walking it while he was living ill at Nice and working on the third part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Drive the Grande Corniche, the RD2564, out of Nice and over its two cols — the col des Quatre-Chemins and then the col d'Èze — as far as La Turbie, keeping the Moyenne and Basse Corniches below you the whole way
2
of 5
Climb the stepped lanes of Èze-Village to 429m and into the Jardin Exotique laid out inside the shell of the ruined castle, then look over its wall at the village cemetery directly below — the garden stands on top of both
3
of 5
Walk the Chemin de Nietzsche down the steep side of the rock from the village to Èze-sur-Mer, the full 429m of it, on the path that bears his name and that he is said to have climbed while he was writing
4
of 5
Walk out to the fort de la Revère on the Grande Corniche above Èze, inside the departmental park, and from the ramparts pick out Cap Ferrat below you to the west and the blockhouses of the old Nice defences along the ridge

of 5
At La Turbie, go round to the west face of the Trophy of Augustus, 35m of it still standing at the highest point of the via Julia Augusta, and read the Senate's dedication with the names of the forty-four Alpine peoples listed under it, then walk the 500m to the Roman quarry and find the column sections still half-cut in the rock

Before you go
The Jardin Exotique opens every day of the year but shuts at 4.30pm from November to March, against 7.30pm in high summer, and it sits at the top of the village — allow the climb through Èze on top of the visit. The Chemin de Nietzsche down to Èze-sur-Mer drops about 400 m in roughly 90 minutes and the climb back up is harder than the descent; there is a train from Èze-sur-Mer along the coast if you would rather not reverse it. Do not take a motorhome up into Èze village: park below and walk, or use the Grande Corniche viewpoints.
The Trophy of Augustus at La Turbie is a ticketed national monument with a small site museum and its own opening days, so check before driving up — and park below La Turbie as you would at Èze, because the old village streets are no place for a motorhome. The Roman quarry stands on the same open ground as the trophy.
