Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and the Lac de Sainte-Croix: The Star, the Faience and the Lake

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, huddles at about 630 m against a rock face beneath a star hung on a chain strung between two mountains — seventeen stories are told about who put it there and none of them is settled. The village was famous in the 17th and 18th centuries for its faience, which tradition credits to a monk from Faenza passing on the secret of a milky white glaze; twelve workshops were working at the end of the 18th century, the last kiln went out in 1873, and Marcel Provence built a new one in 1925 and started the craft again. Below the village, the Lac de Sainte-Croix was filled in 1973 behind a dam on the Verdon and is the fourth-largest reservoir in mainland France at some 2,200 hectares; petrol engines are banned on it, pedalos and small boats cover it from June to September, and Les Salles-sur-Verdon was rebuilt on its shore after the old village was drowned.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Stand in the village and follow the 135 m chain across the ravine to the star, then count its points: five, on a 115 cm star hung in 1957, not the sixteen of the Blacas legend — and it fell again in 1995 and was found at the bottom of the ravine before the village paid to have it regilded

2

of 5

In the faience museum, founded in 1929, find work by all three of the old masters — Clérissy, Olérys and Ferrat — then go into a working atelier in the village and pick out the local flowers and insects Marcel Provence's painters put on their pieces from 1925

3

of 5

Take a pedalo, an electric boat or a sailing dinghy out on the Lac de Sainte-Croix — petrol engines are banned, so the only noise is the wind — and work your way up to the Pont du Galetas where the Verdon comes out of its gorge

4

of 5

Walk the shore at Les Salles-sur-Verdon and look across to Bauduen and Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon on the far banks — the two villages saved when the planned water level was dropped from 500 m to 482 in 1968, leaving Les Salles the only one condemned

5

of 5

Climb the way of the cross above the village, counting the oratories with their enamelled plaques, to the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir — find the Renaissance wooden door, then inside pick out where the two Romanesque bays of the nave give way to the Gothic ones, and look out from the terrace over the Maire valley and the Valensole plateau

Before you go

Boat and pedalo hire on the Lac de Sainte-Croix runs from June to September; outside those months the village, the museum and the chapel are the visit. Petrol outboards are banned on the lake — electric motors and sail only — and in fire season Canadair aircraft scoop water from it, so expect low passes and clear the surface when they do. Moustiers takes more than five tourists per resident and its lanes are narrow: use the car parks on the approach rather than driving a motorhome into the village. The commune has eight campsites, with 763 pitches between the classified ones.
