Rennes: The Parliament of Brittany, the Lices Market and the Portes Mordelaises

The Parliament of Brittany came through the great fire of Rennes in 1720 while the streets around it burned, only to burn itself in the night of 4–5 February 1994 after a fishermen's demonstration turned to rioting. Every Saturday morning the Marché des Lices spreads from the two Halles Martenot of 1868–1871 across the place des Lices and on to the place de la Trinité and the place Saint-Michel, and to the west the Porte Mordelaise, a fifteenth-century gatehouse between two machicolated towers, leads into the half-timbered streets of old Rennes. The Parc du Thabor was laid out by the Bühler brothers.

Required Activities

1

of 5

On the booked tour of the palace, find the sundial set in the tympanum above the main door on the place du Parlement-de-Bretagne, then inside pick out the painted ceilings of the rooms rebuilt to the original after the 1994 fire

2

of 5

At the Saturday market, buy a galette-saucisse from the stalls between the two halls on the place de la Trinité, then work out the layout by trade — butchers in the west hall, producers in the east, fishmongers on the car-park deck, florists on the place Saint-Michel

3

of 5

At the Porte Mordelaise, find the arms carved above the carriage gate — two lions either side of a lance, the banner of the Montfort dukes of Brittany — and the Roman block dedicated to the emperor Gordian III that was reused in the gate with its inscription set upside down

4

of 5

In the Parc du Thabor, stand in the formal garden Denis Bühler laid out — the only garden à la française he ever made — then walk down into the hollow called l'Enfer, dug after the 1720 fire for a reservoir that was never built, used for duels in the nineteenth century and for German executions of Resistance members in 1944

5

of 5

Compare the two market halls with the bandstand, aviary, orangery and glasshouses in the Thabor: all of them were built to the drawings of the same city architect, Jean-Baptiste Martenot

Before you go

The palace is the working Court of Appeal: the interior is only seen on a guided tour, booking compulsory, leaving from rue de Brilhac under the arcades and lasting an hour and a half. The Marché des Lices runs on Saturday mornings only, and vehicles left on the place des Lices before it sets up are towed, so park well away.
