Fécamp: The Bénédictine Palace, the Relic of the Precious Blood and Cap Fagnet
225 + 100 XP
The liqueur borrowed the prestige of the abbey of the Trinity, which Duke Richard II turned into a Benedictine house in 1001 under the Italian reformer Guillaume de Volpiano; its Romanesque church burned in 1168 and the early Gothic abbey church that replaced it is also the burial place of the dukes of Normandy and the pilgrimage church of the Precious Blood.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Go through the Palais Bénédictine knowing you are in the second building — the first, opened in 1888, burned on 12 January 1892 — and find in one circuit the thing it was built to put side by side: a copper still in the working distillery, and in the museum rooms above Alexandre Le Grand's own hoard of carved ivories, coins, old locks and religious paintings
2
of 4
In the abbey church, find the reliquary of the Precious Blood — stolen out of the sacristy one night in June 2022, traced to the Netherlands within weeks and brought back in 2023 — then go to the right of the transept, level with the altar of the Dormition, and find the small shrine called the Pas de l'Ange, built round a footprint in stone, with its 1420 reliquary whose carved figures have all lost their heads
3
of 4
Walk up to Cap Fagnet, at 105 m the highest point of the whole côte d'Albâtre, and find three things on one headland: the sailors' chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Salut, the ditch of the Gaulish oppidum still cut into the turf, and the concrete bed of the German Mammut radar — then pick out Étretat along the cliffs to the south-west
4
of 4
Follow the GR 21 along the cliff edge from the cape, through the bird reserve the Groupe ornithologique normand runs there, and count how many seabird species you can separate before the path drops back towards the port

Before you go
Cap Fagnet is a steep climb of about 105 m from the port; in summer a minibus runs up to it from the town centre. The Atlantic Wall casemates on the headland can only be entered on a guided visit, not wandered into, and the clifftop path has unfenced drops — keep children and dogs well back from the edge.
The Palais Bénédictine runs a very thin timetable from 3 November to 18 December: on weekdays it opens for one hour in the morning, 11am to midday, and from 2pm to 5pm, with a little more at weekends. Over the Christmas holidays, 19 to 31 December, it goes back to 10am to 5.30pm. The operator publishes nothing for January to June, so check benedictinedom.com for the year's dates before a late-winter or spring visit — distilleries commonly shut for a January overhaul. The abbey church of the Trinity and the climb to Notre-Dame-du-Salut on Cap Fagnet are free and open all year; the cliff top is exposed and the wind off the Channel is the thing to dress for.
