Obernai and Mont Sainte-Odile: The Pagan Wall and the Wine Town

easy
history

250 + 100 XP

Mont Sainte-Odile, the convent of Alsace's patron saint at 764 m, is ringed by the Mur Païen, eleven kilometres of wall built of about 300,000 cyclopean blocks, up to three metres high, which nobody has yet dated and nobody can say was defensive or religious; Pope Leo IX gave it the name 'pagan'. At its foot, Obernai's market square keeps the Halle aux Blés of 1554 and the 60 m Kappelturm belfry, and at Rosheim the church of Saints Peter and Paul, built of pink and yellow sandstone around 1150, is one of the great stops on the Romanesque road of northern Alsace.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Walk a stretch of the Mur Païen round the plateau, then in the convent at 764 m find Saint Odile's tomb in the chapel off the cloister and the sarcophagus said to be her father Adalric's, follow Léon Elchinger's ceramic Stations of the Cross of 1933-35 along the rock face, and go down to the spring below whose water was held to cure diseases of the eyes

2

of 4

On Obernai's market square find the two bulls' heads and the town arms on the gable of the Halle aux Blés of 1554 — built as the public butchery — then the six-bucket well of 1579, and look up at the 60 m Kappelturm, all that was left when its 13th-century chapel was pulled down in 1873, with its clock of 1841 and bells cast in 1429 and 1474

3

of 4

In the church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul at Rosheim, built of pink and yellow sandstone around 1150, count the 21 human faces on the carved 'heads capital', look at the apse — the oldest and most richly worked part of the building — and find André Silbermann's organ of 1733

4

of 4

Walk up to the two castles above Ottrott, Rathsamhausen and Lutzelbourg, side by side on the same wooded ridge and both built and rebuilt between the 13th and 15th centuries, and find the older Vieux Lutzelbourg of the 11th and 12th centuries beyond them

Before you go

Obernai holds its Christmas market in the weeks before Christmas, when the Place du Marché and the streets round the Kappelturm are at their busiest.
