Ubaye: White Water, the Mexican Villas of Barcelonnette and the Fort de Tournoux

From 1850 to 1950 the Ubaye valley sent its young men to Mexico, following the Arnaud brothers who had opened a cloth store in Mexico City in 1821 and whose first employees came home rich in 1845. Those who made fortunes in textiles and banking built some fifty villas with parks and gardens at Barcelonnette and Jausiers between 1880 and 1930. Today the valley is known for its white water, and up the valley the Fort de Tournoux, begun in 1843 against invasion from Italy, climbs 700 m of mountainside.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Raft the Ubaye from a base at Méolans-Revel, on the torrent that carried the French kayak championships in 2016 and that starts as a trickle at 3,076 m on the Italian frontier, and get out downstream to look back up at the gradient you have just come down

2

of 4

Visit the Musée de la Vallée inside the Villa Sapinière and find the porch on the way in, held up by columns carved with rosettes, and the rusticated ashlar of a villa built to look like a Mexican department store owner's town house

3

of 4

Walk the villa quarters of Barcelonnette and Jausiers and find two in particular: the Villa Bleue of 1931, art deco, built for the founder of the Francia Marítima store with stained glass by Jacques Grüber, and the twin-towered Villa Javelly of 1913 — then notice how the new suburbs have grown up around houses that were built in open fields

4

of 4

Take the guided tour of the Batterie des Caurres, the upper part of the Fort de Tournoux, and look down the 700 m of mountainside the fortress covers, from the barracks at 1,290 m in the valley floor to Serre-de-l'Aut at 2,008 m — then pick out the ventilation holes in the cliff face that mark the staircase cut through the rock between them

Before you go

The Fort de Tournoux is open only from May to September, only on a guided tour that must be booked in advance online or at a valley tourist office, and only the Batterie des Caurres at the top — the rest of the fortress has been shut on safety grounds. Allow a couple of hours and about 3 km of walking with 100 m of climb. The Ubaye runs on snowmelt, so the rafting water is highest in late spring and thins through August; book the raft the day before, not on the morning.
