Nice and Èze: The Promenade des Anglais, Castle Hill and the Village on the Rock
250 + 100 XP
The Promenade des Anglais runs seven kilometres round the Baie des Anges, from the Var to the quai des États-Unis, and with the villas and hotels of the old winter resort it has been UNESCO-listed since 27 July 2021. Above the old town, the 93 m limestone rock whose castle Louis XIV had levelled in 1706 is now a park with a waterfall and viewpoints over the bay and the port, and along the coast the medieval village of Èze clings to its rock at 429 m.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk or cycle the seven kilometres of the Promenade des Anglais, which began in 1822 as a two-metre dirt path cut by the wintering British — paid for, it is said, by the Reverend Lewis Way — then sit in one of the blue chairs under a pergola at dusk and watch the lamp-posts throw light upwards as well as down: they double as approach beacons for the airport
2
of 4
Climb the Colline du Château to the waterfall, built in 1885 over the ruins of the keep and doubling as the overflow of Nice's first water main, then find the base of the keep's north wall by the belvedere above it and the cannonball strike still marked in the stone
3
of 4
Get to the Cours Saleya in Vieux-Nice on a morning between Tuesday and Sunday, when the flower and vegetable market that the town first authorised here on 22 July 1861 is still running, and buy your lunch off the stalls before the traders pack up at midday
4
of 4
Walk up the chemin de Nietzsche from Èze-Bord-de-Mer, a steep path the philosopher is said to have used while he was living at Nice, and finish at 429 m in the Jardin exotique laid out among the ruins of the castle above the village cemetery

Before you go
The Colline du Château park is free and open every day but closes at 6pm from 1 October to 31 March, and the Jardin exotique at Èze shuts at 4.30pm from November to March — so in winter the two climbs of this challenge have to come before the afternoon runs out. The Cours Saleya market is Tuesday to Sunday mornings and the traders pack up around midday: on a Monday there is no market at all, and the square is given over to the brocante instead. The chemin de Nietzsche from Èze-Bord-de-Mer climbs about 400 m and takes roughly 90 minutes up.
