Colmar, Eguisheim and Kaysersberg: The Issenheim Altarpiece and the Wine-Route Villages
275 + 100 XP
Colmar's Musée Unterlinden holds the Issenheim Altarpiece, its panels painted by Matthias Grünewald in 1512–1516 round carvings by Nicolas of Haguenau, and the town is the birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. Just outside, Eguisheim coils in concentric streets round its castle, and Kaysersberg, birthplace of Albert Schweitzer, was voted the French people's favourite village in 2017.
Required Activities
1
of 5
In the old convent church at the Musée Unterlinden, work round the Issenheim Altarpiece and find the three things that show it was painted for a hospital ward: the blue lips and nail-twisted feet of the Christus dolens, the medicinal herbs against Saint Antony's fire lying at Saint Antony's feet, and Saint Sebastian standing guard against plague on the left shutter
2
of 5
Take a flat-bottomed barge up the Lauch from the quai de la Poissonnerie beside the covered market to the old market gardens, the route the Krutenau growers used to bring their vegetables in to the quayside
3
of 5
Go into the Musée Bartholdi at 30 rue des Marchands, the house the sculptor was born in and which was left to the town in 1907, and find the bronze group Les grands Soutiens du monde of 1902 standing in its courtyard
4
of 5
Walk one full lap of Eguisheim's ring of streets, laid out on the octagonal line of the old wall that copied the castle's own rare octagonal plan, and finish in the castle courtyard at the chapel of Saint-Léon IX, built 1888 to 1894 on the foundations of the keep
5
of 5
Cross Kaysersberg's fortified bridge of 1514 and stop at the chapel standing mid-span under the arms of the Holy Roman Empire, then climb to the Schlossberg, built about 1210 with a round keep at the point of its triangular wall, and come back down past the house where Albert Schweitzer was born on 14 January 1875

Before you go
Colmar, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim all hold Christmas markets. Colmar's is spread over half a dozen squares and runs from the first weekend of Advent to 30 or 31 December; Kaysersberg's runs 24 November to Christmas Eve and no further, revived from 1987 by the village association Noël à Kaysersberg.
The Musée Bartholdi closes for the whole of January — its season runs 3 February to 31 December — and never opens on a Monday, closing at 3.30pm on 24 and 31 December. The Unterlinden shuts on Tuesdays. The barques on the Lauch run daily from 10am to 11.45am and 1.30pm to 6pm and thin out to weekends only in the shoulder months, so book on 03 89 41 01 94 rather than turning up; they leave from the Pont Saint-Pierre on the rue de la Herse, not the quai de la Poissonnerie, which is what you float past. December is the month this challenge is built for, but it is also the month Colmar is at its busiest.
