Perpignan: The Kings of Majorca, the Castillet and the Campo Santo

For eighty years Perpignan was the mainland capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, until Peter the Ceremonious took the city on 16 July 1344. Its kings' palace, built in the last third of the 13th century, is one of the first fortress-palaces in the West, decades ahead of the popes' palace at Avignon, Vincennes and Karlštejn. The brick Castillet, raised about 1368 to guard a new gate and later a state prison, now holds the Casa Pairal, the museum of Catalan life.

Required Activities

1

of 3

Work round the three courtyards of the Palais des rois de Majorque naming what each wing did: the Palais Blanc to the west, probably the throne room; the Salle des Timbres to the north where the council met; the two stacked chapels to the east, Sainte-Madeleine below and Sainte-Croix above; and the Salle de Majorque to the south where the king held parliament and gave judgement. Look for the mudéjar decoration grafted onto the Gothic

2

of 3

Climb the Castillet's spiral stair to the Casa Pairal on the second floor and out onto the flagged terrace where prisoners were walked, and on the way find the white-stone window in the Petit Castillet wall left of the Virgin: behind it, in 1948, a municipal librarian opened a walled recess and found the skeleton of a child in leather shoes, put there in the late 19th century and still unidentified

3

of 3

Walk the three surviving galleries of the Campo Santo beside Perpignan cathedral, the oldest and largest medieval cemetery left in France, and count the arched tomb recesses set in the walls — between 2.10 m and 2.35 m wide — then find the Funeraria, the funerary chapel built between 1383 and 1389 at the cloister's north-east corner; the fourth gallery, on the west side, was pulled down in 1825

Before you go

Salses is run by the Centre des monuments nationaux and the interior is seen on a timed guided visit, so check the day's slots before driving out. The Castillet is reached by a narrow spiral stair with no lift.

The fortress of Salses, thrown up by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile from 1497, is about 16 km north on the corridor between the lagoon and the hills. It is a substantial visit in its own right rather than an add-on to a day in Perpignan.
