Azincourt: Henry V's Battlefield, Fressin Castle and Hesdin

easy
history

275 + 100 XP

On 25 October 1415 Henry V drew up about 6,000 men at Azincourt — 5,000 of them archers behind rows of sharpened stakes — against a French army far larger, and broke it in a ploughed field soaked by a night of rain. The Centre Azincourt 1415 was inaugurated beside the site in August 2019. Five kilometres west, Jean V de Créquy, chamberlain to Philip the Good, raised the castle of Fressin with eight round towers in the 15th century, and Hesdin, twelve kilometres south-west in the Canche valley, is the town where the abbé Prévost, author of Manon Lescaut, was born on 1 April 1697.

Required Activities

1

of 5

In the Centre Azincourt 1415, work out how 6,000 men beat a far larger army: find where Erpingham's archers stood on the flanks, the 200 he hid in the wood of Tramecourt against encirclement, and the chronicler's line about French troops wading through mud up to their knees

2

of 5

Walk the signposted circuit out to the battle site midway between Azincourt, Tramecourt and Maisoncelle, and stand in the narrowest part of the clearing between the woods of Azincourt and Tramecourt — the 600 m of ploughed ground Henry advanced into so the French would have to come to him

3

of 5

Walk the ruins of Fressin, the 15th-century fortress of Jean V de Créquy with its eight cylindrical towers and its artillery bastions, and go down into the souterrains under it

4

of 5

Walk Hesdin from its market square to the Canche, the town where the king's procurator at the bailliage had a son on 1 April 1697 — the abbé Prévost, schooled here by the Jesuits before he wrote Manon Lescaut

If you are here in July of an even-numbered year, walk the medieval encampment and craft market at Azincourt's biennial fête, where the battle is re-enacted and men fight in armour

Before you go

The Centre Azincourt 1415 opens daily except Tuesdays, 10:00 to 17:30, and 10:00 to 18:30 in July and August; allow an hour and a half to two hours inside. Fressin castle is open to visitors in the warmer half of the year only.
