Peyrepertuse and Quéribus: The Castles in the Sky
300 + 100 XP
After the crusade against the Cathars the French crown turned the crags of the Corbières into royal fortresses on the frontier with Aragon. Peyrepertuse runs 300 m along a limestone crest at close to 800 m, and Quéribus, at 728 m, was one of the last castles to shelter leaders of the Cathar church after the fall of Montségur, surrendering in the third week of May 1255. Both were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list on 26 July 2026 as part of the Capetian Royal Fortresses of Languedoc.

Find the Romanesque church of Sainte-Marie in the lower castle of Peyrepertuse
3

From the terrace on top of the Quéribus keep, pick out the Roussillon plain, the Mediterranean, the Corbières vineyards and the line of the Pyrenees, and below you the Grau de Maury pass the castle was built to guard

Before you go
The climb to Peyrepertuse is strongly discouraged and often closed in storms or high wind: the Escalier Saint-Louis is slippery even in fine weather. The road stops at a car park below the cliff, with about fifteen minutes on foot from there. Peyrepertuse is open all year except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
