The Vallée des Merveilles: Thirty-Six Thousand Engravings Around Mont Bégo
425 + 100 XP
Around Mont Bégo, in the high Mercantour above Tende, some 36,000 prehistoric engravings have been recorded, pecked into glacier-smoothed outcrops and erratic boulders in the Neolithic and the early Bronze Age — about 20,000 of them figurative, on 4,200 rocks over some 1,400 hectares in the sectors of the Merveilles, Fontanalbe, Valmasque, Valaurette, Sabion and Sainte-Marie, all of them above 2,000 m. Counting the later incised engravings as well, the total may approach 100,000, which makes this the largest rock-art site in France, ahead of Fontainebleau. The commonest figure is a horned animal, read as cattle, followed by weapons — daggers, halberds and axes — human figures and grids. The engravings had been noted since the end of the 17th century; the Briton Clarence Bicknell began the first systematic study in 1897, the sculptor Carlo Conti followed from 1927 to 1942, and Henry de Lumley's team has been recording them since 1967. Some researchers read Mont Bégo as a mountain that was worshipped, a bull cult behind the horned figures; the interpretation is contested. The Musée départemental des Merveilles in Tende holds casts, and one engraving lifted out of the valley whole.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk the GR52 up into the Vallée des Merveilles, above 2,000 m, and find the engravings on the roches moutonnées beside the path — you may not step off the GR52 into the protected sectors unless you are with an accredited guide, so book one if you want to see the rest — and at the Paroi vitrifiée, the great glacier-polished wall in the Merveilles sector, pick out the densest panel of incised marks on the site
2
of 4
Work along the panels naming what you find as you go: corniformes, the horned figures that outnumber everything else; the weapons — daggers, halberds, axes; the araires, ploughs drawn by yoked animals, which prove these were farmers and not only herders; and the réticulés, the grids read as fields or stock pens. Then tell the two techniques apart: the older pecked engravings, made by knocking out cupules, against the later incised lines cut in a V.
3
of 4
Start at the Musée départemental des Merveilles in Tende, as the archaeologists working on the site recommend, and find the chef de tribu — not a cast but the engraved rock itself, lifted off the mountain by helicopter in 1988 to save it from vandalism and frost — then go up the valley knowing what you are looking at
4
of 4
Cross to Fontanalba, the second of the two rich sectors at 486 hectares against the Merveilles' 972, and on a guided visit find the panel known as the Arbre de vie — the one figure on the mountain that nobody has been able to explain

Before you go
The engraving sectors are inside the core zone of the Mercantour national park and are classified monuments: you may not leave the GR52 without an accredited guide, and defacing a rock is a prosecutable offence. Book a guide in advance for the season you are going in. There is no road into the valley — it is a mountain walk-in from the valley below, above 2,000 m, and the mountain is known for frequent, violent storms that build in the afternoon; start early and turn back if it darkens. The museum in Tende is closed on Tuesdays, from 13 to 25 November and on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December; it opens 10am to 6pm from 16 June to 15 September and 10am to 5pm the rest of the year.
