Gréoux-les-Bains and Valensole: The Spa and the Lavender

easy
wellness

200 + 100 XP

Gréoux-les-Bains on the Verdon has a sulphur spa used since Roman times, with the Château des Templiers above the thermal town. North of it the Plateau de Valensole is covered in lavender that blooms in summer, and in Manosque the L'Occitane factory tells the story of the Provençal cosmetics brand born in Haute-Provence.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Take a treatment at the Thermes de Gréoux-les-Bains, on sulphur water the Romans piped into baths here and dedicated to the spring nymphs — the Roman name of the place, Nymphis Griselicis, is literally the dedication — then find the troglodyte Roman baths cut into the rock and the first-century pool the archaeologists uncovered beside them

2

of 4

Walk up to the castle Gréoux calls the Château des Templiers although no record puts the Templars here — it belonged to the counts of Provence from 1248 and then to the Hospitallers — and in its rectangular courtyard pick out the round tower on the north-east corner against the square keep on the north-west, which may go back to the 12th century

3

of 4

On the hour-long tour of L'Occitane's manufacture at Manosque, follow one bottle from raw plant to filled pack on the production lines, then go out into the Mediterranean garden and find the growing plant behind the scent you smelled on the line

4

of 4

Drive out onto the Valensole plateau and walk the verges and tracks between the lavandin rows — not into them, they are a crop on 81,400 hectares of working farmland — and find the three things that share the plateau with it: wheat, truffle oaks and the almond trees that were the plateau's money in the 19th century

Before you go

The lavender on the Plateau de Valensole is in bloom in summer.

The Thermes de Gréoux open 3 March to 5 December and are closed every Sunday; treatments must be arranged with the spa in advance. The L'Occitane tour at Manosque is by compulsory advance booking only, lasts an hour and costs 6 euro, free under 13. Lavandin is cut from mid-July, so a late-summer trip may find bare rows. The plateau is one of the stormiest places in France, with over 35 storms a year and evening thunderstorms from mid-August, so do not plan to be out on it late in the day.
