The Camargue: Pont de Gau, the Vaccarès and Saintes-Maries
275 + 100 XP
The Camargue, the delta of the Rhône, is a land of lagoons, salt pans and reed beds where semi-wild white horses and flamingos live. The Étang de Vaccarès, its largest lagoon, covers 6,500 hectares inside the Camargue national nature reserve. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the coast, 30 kilometres south-west of Arles as the crow flies, calls itself the capital of the Camargue and grew up round its church of the 11th and 12th centuries; every 24 May more than 10,000 Roma, Manouches, Gitans and other travellers come from all over Europe to venerate their patron saint, Sara.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk the seven kilometres of path across the 60 hectares of Pont de Gau towards sunset, when the flamingos, herons and egrets come in close, and find the wildlife care centre that takes in around 350 injured birds a year — the same place that took in starving flamingos when 90 per cent of the Camargue lagoons froze over in February 2012
2
of 4
Walk or cycle east out of Saintes-Maries along the digue à la mer, between the étangs de la Dame, du Tampan and de Galabert inside the national nature reserve, as far as the Gacholle lighthouse — a plain 18 m masonry tower put up in 1882 to get boats safely into the Beauduc anchorage — counting the flamingo flocks on either side of the dyke as you go
3
of 4
Drive the roads that run right round the Étang de Vaccarès — 12 km long and nowhere more than two metres deep — and stop where the manades are out, the loose herds of white horses and black bulls that gave the lagoon its name: vaccarès means the place where the cows graze
4
of 4
Drive the D570 through the delta from Arles to Saintes-Maries and go into the fortified church: down to the crypt where the travellers dress and venerate Sara the Black, then up to the high chapel, a keep in its own right with a wall-walk round its base and a crenellated platform on top, built to hold the relics and the villagers when the Saracens came. Van Gogh spent five days here in June 1888 painting the boats on this beach

Before you go
The Pont de Gau bird park keeps its exit open until sunset all year, but the ticket office closes at 18h from April to September and 17h from October to March, so you must be inside before then to walk it at dusk. About EUR 8.50 an adult and EUR 5 for 4 to 12s, and your ticket lasts all day. No dogs and no drones anywhere in the park.
On 24 and 25 May more than 10,000 travellers come to Saintes-Maries for the pilgrimage of Sara: the village and every pitch for miles are full, roads are closed and the church is packed. Go then only if the pilgrimage is what you came for, and book months ahead.
