Chambord: Francis I's Hunting Lodge and the Double Staircase

easy
history

250 + 100 XP

Francis I began Chambord in 1519 as a hunting lodge, and it is the largest of the Loire châteaux: 426 rooms, 282 fireplaces and 77 staircases under a roofline crowded with towers, lanterns and chimneys. At its centre is the open double-spiral staircase, two flights winding round one another up through the five habitable levels of the keep — two people climbing it can see each other through the openings but never meet. The design is often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, who died a few months before work began and among whose drawings a double-helix stair and Greek-cross plans were found, with the model made in 1517 by his assistant Domenico da Cortona. Around it lies the largest walled forest park in Europe, some 50 km2 inside a wall 32 km long, and Chambord is the only French royal estate still intact as it was created.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Send half your party up one flight of the double staircase and half up the other, and watch each other through the openings the whole way without ever meeting; at every level notice that the stair opens into four vestibules laid out as a cross, one for each quarter of the keep, and keep going until it puts you out on the terrace

2

of 5

On the roof terraces, find the 34 m lantern tower over the staircase that stands higher than every chimney at Chambord, with a fleur-de-lys on top; then hunt for a crowned F carved back to front — some were cut in mirror image at terrace level so that God, looking down, would read the king's power the right way round

3

of 5

Look at Chambord from the south and sort the medieval from the Renaissance in one building: the low enclosing wall and the four fat corner towers on the old castle model, against the Greek-cross plan of the four state rooms on every floor and the terrace above them

4

of 5

Cycle out into the estate — 50 km2 inside a wall 32 km long, the largest enclosed forest park in Europe — and get far enough from the château to see red deer or wild boar from one of the observation platforms; on the way back, walk the six and a half hectares of formal gardens north and east of the building, put back in 2017 after two centuries gone

No contemporary document names Chambord's architect. Find the two things in the building that also appear in Leonardo's surviving drawings — the double-helix stair and the Greek-cross arrangement of four rooms round it — and see whether the building convinces you

Before you go

The estate is large — allow time to walk back from the far side of the park.

The estate is 50 km2 behind a 32 km wall, so a walk that looks short on the map is not — hire a bike or a boat at the château rather than setting off on foot for the far side. Only part of the park is open to visitors; the rest is a hunting reserve. The Cosson flooded the north parterres and the royal courtyard in June 2016 and closed the château for a week, so check before you travel after heavy winter rain.
