A golf caddie who wanted a distillery on the east Fife coast got one: Kingsbarns opened in 2014 in a restored, once semi-derelict 18th-century farm steading near the sea, growing its barley on the surrounding farms. The Fife Coastal Path runs past the village, and Cambo's walled garden and snowdrop woods lie next door.

The East Neuk is the string of fishing villages on the south-east corner of Fife, among them Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail, joined by the Fife Coastal Path. The Scottish Fisheries Museum is in Anstruther, and inland near Crail, Scotland's Secret Bunker is a Cold War command centre hidden beneath a farmhouse.

Golf has been played at St Andrews for centuries, and when golf is not being played visitors can stand on the Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course, where Open champions have posed for generations. The R&A World Golf Museum stands beside it, many Old Course tee times are given out by ballot, and in the town the ruined cathedral and St Rule's Tower look over the sea.

Walk the Fife Coastal Path east from Elie to St Monans

Elie is a small resort on the Fife coast about ten miles south of St Andrews. On the east side of Elie Ness the Lady's Tower was built in the 1770s for Janet, Lady Anstruther; it is said that while she bathed below it a servant rang a bell to keep the locals away. West of the town the Elie Chain Walk is a rock route of about half a kilometre along the base of the cliffs, with chains first fitted in the 1920s, passable only at low tide, and the Fife Coastal Path runs east to St Monans.

Dundee built RRS Discovery in 1901 for Captain Scott's first Antarctic expedition, and she is back on the waterfront at Discovery Point. Beside her, V&A Dundee opened in 2018 as Scotland's first design museum, and in the city centre the McManus is a Victorian Gothic art gallery and museum.

Take a boat trip round the Bass Rock, the volcanic plug that holds one of the world's largest northern gannet colonies

The Bass Rock is a volcanic plug 107m high, 5km north-east of North Berwick, and one of the largest northern gannet colonies in the world, though numbers fell by more than 30% after bird flu struck in 2022 — the gannet's scientific name, Morus bassanus, comes from it. The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, opened in 2000, watches it with live cameras, and boats go out round it and past Craigleith, where puffins nest.

Walk up the valley to the show caves at Dan yr Ogof

The soprano Adelina Patti bought Craig y Nos in 1878 and built a private theatre inside it, with an auditorium floor that could be raised level to turn it into a ballroom. The country park around it runs along the Tawe under the Beacons, and the Dan yr Ogof caves are just up the valley road.

Fyvie grew from a 13th-century castle into a great Scottish baronial front of five towers, each added by one of the five families that held it in turn — Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Leith. Inside are the great wheel stair Alexander Seton added in the early 1600s and a collection of portraits including Raeburns; outside, a loch and parkland.
