Rye: Cinque Port, Smugglers' Inn and Cobbled Hill
225 XP
Rye was one of the two Antient Townes of the Cinque Ports confederation, almost surrounded by the sea until the harbour silted, and it ran ships for the Crown and cargoes past the excise men. The cellars of the Mermaid Inn date from 1156, and the Hawkhurst Gang drank there openly in the 1740s; the Ypres Tower above the marsh has guarded the town since the 13th century.
