Knaresborough: The Petrifying Well and the Viaduct
225 XP
Knaresborough stands above a gorge of the Nidd crossed by a railway viaduct, with a ruined castle on the cliff. On the far bank, the dropping well beside Mother Shipton's Cave coats objects hung under it in minerals until they look like stone, and has been charging visitors since 1630 — the oldest paying tourist attraction in England. Mother Shipton, the legendary prophetess said to have been born Ursula Southeil in the cave around 1488, gives the place its name.
