The Tremayne family laid out these gardens near Mevagissey from the middle of the 18th century to the start of the 20th, in the Gardenesque style, with each area given a different character. Then the First World War took the gardeners and the whole thing was left to the brambles for seventy years, until a restoration in the 1990s brought it back and made it famous through television and books. They are now among the most visited gardens in Britain.

Visit the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing

Polperro is a fishing village packed into a cleft with a harbour that can be shut against the sea by a gate, and smuggling reached its height here in the late 18th century, financed by a local merchant, Zephaniah Job, known as the Smugglers' Banker. The Heritage Museum on the quay tells that story, and Looe, four miles east, is a working fishing port either side of a seven-arched bridge.

Padstow sits inside the Camel estuary behind the Doom Bar, a working harbour turned food town. The Camel Trail runs 18 miles from the quay along the old railway line to Wadebridge and on to Bodmin and Wenfordbridge, almost level and traffic-free apart from a short stretch through Wadebridge, and the ferry crosses the estuary to Rock.

The diocese of Truro was created in December 1876 and its cathedral built between 1880 and 1910 to a Gothic Revival design by John Loughborough Pearson — the first Anglican cathedral raised on a new site in England since Salisbury in 1220. It went up on the site of the parish church of St Mary, whose south aisle was kept and built into it. Below the three spires the Georgian streets run down to the river.

Walk up Brown Willy, at 420 metres the highest point in Cornwall, or its neighbour Rough Tor

Jamaica Inn stands alone on the Bodmin Moor road at Bolventor, an 18th-century coaching inn on the route the contraband travelled inland from the coast, and Daphne du Maurier used it for the novel after being lost on the moor in fog. The moor around it holds Dozmary Pool, where one story says Excalibur went back into the water.

Walk out to the headland and look for the Cribbar breaking on a big swell

Fistral faces west into the Atlantic, which is why it is one of the most consistent surf breaks in Britain; the Newquay Surf Life Saving Club and the Newquay Boardriders are based here, and it hosts international competitions. Westerly and north-westerly groundswells make powerful waves for intermediate and advanced surfers, and when the swell is really big the Cribbar reef at the north end starts to break.

Glastonbury Tor is a conical hill of clay and Blue Lias, capped with hard sandstone, rising to 158 metres out of the Somerset Levels, with the roofless tower of St Michael's Church on top. Its Welsh name was Ynys Wydrin, the Isle of Glass, and the monks of the abbey below made it Avalon: destroyed by fire in 1184 and rebuilding slowly as pilgrims fell away, the abbey announced in 1191 that it had found the tomb of Arthur and Guinevere in its cemetery. The last abbot, Richard Whiting, was hanged, drawn and quartered on the Tor in 1539. The Glastonbury thorn flowers twice a year, in winter and in spring, and a flowering sprig is sent to the monarch every Christmas; and at the foot of Chalice Hill the Chalice Well, the Red Spring, has been in almost constant use for at least two thousand years.

Arlington Row at Bibury is a terrace of 17th-century weavers' cottages converted from a 14th-century wool store, and William Morris is said to have called the village the most beautiful in England. The Coln runs past it through Rack Isle, the water meadow where the cloth was hung to dry, and the trout farm beside the bridge has been breeding brown trout since 1902.
