The Hellfire Caves at West Wycombe were dug in 1748–52 for Sir Francis Dashwood, whose Order of the Friars of St Francis of Wycombe became known as the Hellfire Club, and on the hill above them the church tower carries a golden ball. Benjamin Disraeli lived at Hughenden Manor from 1848 to 1881, and in the Second World War it hid a secret map-making operation codenamed Hillside.
