Pendle Hill: George Fox's Vision and the Pendle Witches
325 XP
Pendle Hill, 557m, is tied to three events of the 17th century. In 1612 twelve people from the country round it were accused of killing ten by witchcraft; ten were hanged, nine of them after the trials at Lancaster. In 1652 George Fox climbed the hill and had the vision that led to the Quakers, and in 1661 Richard Towneley carried out barometer experiments on it. In Newchurch-in-Pendle, the Demdike family's village, St Mary's church has the Eye of God built into its tower, and a grave by the porch carved with a skull and crossbones is said by local legend to be that of Alice Nutter, one of the accused.
