Llandudno: The Great Orme Tramway and the Longest Pier in Wales
250 XP
Llandudno was being called the Queen of the Welsh Watering Places by 1861. It lies below the Great Orme, a limestone headland 207m high with herds of wild Kashmiri goats descended from a pair the Shah of Persia gave Queen Victoria. The Great Orme Tramway, opened in 1902 and 1903, is the only cable-hauled street tramway left in Britain and still runs its original cars; the pier of 1877 is 700m long, the longest in Wales. Alice Liddell's family holidayed here — the Alice of Wonderland, though the story itself was first told on the river at Oxford — which is why there is a White Rabbit in the town.
