Conwy: Edward I's Castle and the Walled Town

easy
history

250 XP

Edward I built Conwy Castle and the town walls together between 1283 and 1287, to the design of James of St George, and both are still almost complete: eight towers on the castle and walls running right round the medieval town, part of the World Heritage Site since 1986. People born inside the walls are nicknamed Jackdaws, after the birds that live on them. Inside the town is Plas Mawr, the Elizabethan townhouse of 1576, and on the quay stands the smallest house in Great Britain, 1.8m wide.
