Stirling Castle stands on its rock above the town; James V made it the first Renaissance palace in the British Isles in the 1530s and 1540s, alongside the Great Hall of 1503 and the Chapel Royal of 1594. On Abbey Craig across the valley, the Wallace Monument, built in 1861–69, is 67m tall with 246 steps and holds the Wallace Sword. South of the town, Robert the Bruce beat Edward II at Bannockburn on 23–24 June 1314.
