Tharros: A Phoenician City on the Sinis Peninsula

Tharros was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC at the tip of the Sinis peninsula, in the comune of Cabras. Carthage fortified and enlarged it, Rome took it in 238 BC and rebuilt it, and the place was given up around 1050. What stands now is open ground above the sea with the tophet, the baths and the foundations of the temple among the streets of the houses and workshops.

Before you go
The site is open ground on a headland with very little shade and no shelter, and the stone throws the heat back. Take water and a hat, and in high summer go early or late rather than in the middle of the day.
