Bosa: The Castle on Serravalle and the Temo

easy

225 + 100 XP

Bosa climbs a hillside in the province of Oristano above the Temo, the only navigable river in Sardinia, for about six kilometres of its length. The Malaspina built the castle on the hill of Serravalle in the second half of the 13th century and the old town runs below it in close lanes of painted houses. Tanning grew up along the river in the 19th century, and the town’s own needle lace, the filet di Bosa, is still made here.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Climb the lanes of the old town up to the Castello Malaspina on the hill of Serravalle, put up by the Malaspina in the second half of the 13th century, and from the walls pick out how the town is laid out below

2

of 4

Walk the bank of the Temo and follow the navigable water — about six kilometres of it, and the only navigable river on the island

3

of 4

Find the filet di Bosa, the town’s own needle lace, either being worked or for sale, and look at how the pattern is built on a knotted net rather than woven

4

of 4

Find the old tanneries on the river bank, where the hide-tanning trade grew up in the 19th century, and work out why the trade sat on that side of the water

Before you go

The climb to the Castello Malaspina is up steep lanes and steps from the old town, and the old quarter is too tight for anything large, so park below and walk in.
