Monte d’Accoddi: The Neolithic Altar Near Sassari

medium
history

350 + 100 XP

Monte d’Accoddi stands in the comune of Sassari, founded between 4000 and 3650 BC and enlarged between 2800 and 2400 BC: a truncated pyramid 37.5 metres by 30.5 and about nine metres high, climbed by a ramp of 41.5 metres. A limestone slab of 8.2 tonnes and a squared menhir of 4.4 metres lie beside it. Its shape has it compared to the ziggurats of Mesopotamia, which is a resemblance and nothing more.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Walk the full 41.5 metres of the access ramp, which widens from seven metres to thirteen and a half as it climbs, and go up onto the platform the way it was meant to be approached

2

of 4

Pace the platform itself: a truncated pyramid 37.5 metres on the north and south sides, 30.5 on the east and west, standing about nine metres

3

of 4

Find the limestone slab beside the ramp, eight point two tonnes of it, and the squared menhir of four metres forty and five point seven tonnes

4

of 4

Judge the ziggurat comparison for yourself. The shape invites it and the books repeat it, but nothing links this to Mesopotamia — it was founded between 4000 and 3650 BC and enlarged between 2800 and 2400 BC, on its own
