Carlow Castle: The First Towered Keep in Ireland
200 XP
Carlow Castle is thought to have been built by William Marshal between 1207 and 1213 and it was the first of its kind in Ireland — a towered keep, a great rectangular block with four three-quarter-round towers at its corners, walls 2.7 metres thick. It survived six centuries. Then in 1814 a man converting it into a lunatic asylum decided to make more room inside by using explosives, and brought most of it down. Two towers and one wall are all that is left, standing beside the Barrow in the middle of the town.
