Kilkenny: Cave of the Dead and the Witch's Inn

Dunmore Cave near Ballyfoyle holds one of the most violent events in Irish recorded history: in 928 AD, Viking raiders massacred people sheltering inside, killing around 1,000 according to the Annals of the Four Masters. Archaeologists recovered the remains of dozens of people, mostly women and children — and, separately, a hoard of 43 silver and bronze items buried in the cave around 970, some forty years after the attack. In Kilkenny city, Kyteler's Inn on St. Kieran Street was the home of Dame Alice Kyteler, convicted of witchcraft in 1324 — the first such conviction in Ireland.

Note on the same plaque that Petronella de Meath, Kyteler's maid, was flogged and burned in her place in 1324 — the first person burned for witchcraft in Ireland; the inn takes its name and its site from her house
