Laffrey: 'If Any of You Will Shoot His Emperor, Here I Am'
225 + 100 XP
On 7 March 1815, in the narrow defile between the hill and the Grand lac de Laffrey on the road north to Grenoble, Napoleon, back from exile on Elba, came face to face with commandant Lessard's battalion of the 5th line infantry — sent by General Marchand, who meant to arrest him and shut him in the fort Barraux. Napoleon opened his greatcoat, walked out in front of the royalist soldiers and shouted: 'Soldiers of the 5th! Recognise your emperor! If there is one of you who wants to kill me, here I am!' The regiment went over to him. Stendhal gave the place its name, the Prairie de la Rencontre — the meadow of the meeting. Emmanuel Frémiet's equestrian Napoleon, commissioned in 1861, stood in Grenoble from 1868 until it was pulled down in 1870, and after an abandoned plan to re-erect it in Corsica it was brought here in 1930; the bronze reliefs of the scene, taken off its pedestal, are mounted on two walls at the entrance.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Stand in the meadow and read the ground as Lessard's officers did: a narrow defile pinched between the hillside and the lake, the only way north, no room to go round — then work out where you would have put your men across it
2
of 5
Look at Frémiet's Napoleon in his bicorne and work out that it was never made for this field: commissioned in 1861, cast by Charnod, it showed the emperor riding in triumph into Grenoble and stood on the place de Verdun there from 1868 until it was pulled off its plinth in 1870 — then waited sixty years, through an abandoned scheme to ship it to Corsica, before being set down here in 1930
3
of 5
At the entrance, find the bronze reliefs of the encounter of 7 March 1815 mounted on two walls — they were made for the statue's pedestal in Grenoble and were taken off it, so you are looking at the base of a monument that no longer has one
4
of 5
Walk the shore of the Grand lac de Laffrey — one of the twenty-five classified natural sites of the Isère — and look east to the Grand Serre across the water: the edge of the woods on its western slopes happens to draw an imperial eagle in the pasture above them, which nobody planned
5
of 5
Walk to the top of the descent in the middle of Laffrey, at 910 m, and look down the road Napoleon's column took: 6.5 km and more than 600 metres down to Vizille, 12 per cent in its lower half with pitches at 16 and 18, ending in a 110-degree bend at the bridge over the Romanche. Read the prohibition signs where a flashing skull once stood, and count how many there are

Before you go
Do not drive north out of Laffrey towards Vizille in anything tall or heavy. The descent of the Rampe de Laffrey is barred by gantries at Les Renardières, 800 m from the top, that limit height to 2.60 m — lower than most motorhomes — and it is closed to vehicles over 7.5 t and to coaches. Lorries and coaches on the RN85 turn off at La Mure for the D529 round to Grenoble, and so should you. Do not let a car sat-nav route you down it: the 2007 coach disaster, 26 dead, happened to a driver following one past fourteen prohibition signs. Approach and leave the meadow from the south.
