Aléria: The Greek City of Alalia

easy
history

225 + 100 XP

Phocaean Greeks driven out of Asia Minor by the Persians — the same people who founded Marseille — are traditionally said to have built Alalia around 565 BC on the 59-metre hill here, facing the Italian coast, though archaeologists have yet to find a single potsherd of that date to prove it. Etruscans settled in the wealthy city and it became the capital of the island; Rome took it in 259 BC, Sulla planted a colony of his veterans, and Augustus made it the capital of Roman Corsica, with the emperor's procurator living here in a palace. For seven centuries it was a great export port for granite, ore, oil and cork. Barbary raids and malaria then emptied it over the centuries, and the malaria was only broken in the Second World War. The Genoese-period Fort de Matra, named for the family that ruled the piève of Serra, has held the Jérôme-Carcopino archaeological museum since 1978, with finds mostly from the pre-Roman necropolis of Casabianda. Facing it stands San Marcellu, probably built in the 4th or 5th century and possibly the first cathedral in Corsica. On 22 August 1975 the storming of an occupied farm here became the founding act of modern Corsican nationalism. Just north lies the Étang de Diane, the island's main shellfish lagoon.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Walk the excavated town on its hill and tick off the pieces: the forum and its porticoes, the temple, the nymphaeum, the shops and houses, the balneum with its mosaics, the industrial workshop and the street drains — the first complete ancient town plan ever uncovered in Corsica

2

of 5

In the Fort de Matra, look for the Etruscan grave goods rather than the Roman ones: 179 Etruscan-culture tombs dated between 500 and 259 BC were opened in the 1960s and 1970s and another 130 since digging resumed in 2018, which is why Aléria counts as an Etruscan city as much as a Greek or Roman one

3

of 5

Cross from the fort to the parish church of San Marcellu standing opposite it — on the best reading of the evidence a 4th- or 5th-century building and the first cathedral in Corsica, which would make it older than almost anything else standing on the island

4

of 5

Eat oysters on the Étang de Diane, where the beds still straddle the Aléria and Tallone shores, and look across to the Île de Diana — Roman Aléria shipped these oysters marinated in amphorae to the senators of Rome and dumped the thousands of shells on that islet, where they still turn up in the layers

5

of 5

Find the glass stele put up on 22 August 2014 near where the assault happened: on 21 August 1975 a dozen men led by Edmond Simeoni and his brother Max occupied a winegrower's farm here, and the storming of it the next day is taken as the founding act of modern Corsican nationalism

Before you go

The Greek-period rampart is not open to visitors, so do not go looking for it; the Roman town, the necropolis and the museum in the fort are the accessible parts. The site is in open ground with little shade.

The excavated town and the museum in the Fort de Matra are one site run by the Collectivité de Corse: 9am to 5pm from 1 October to 15 May with last entry at 4.30pm, and 10am to 6pm from 16 May to 30 September with last entry at 5.30pm. It is closed every Sunday, and on 1 and 11 November, 24 and 25 December, 1 and 2 January and 1 May — so a Sunday out of season gets you the church of San Marcellu, the Étang de Diane and the 1975 stele but not the forum or the Etruscan tombs.
