The Calanque de Sugiton: White Limestone and Deep Water
300 + 100 XP
Sugiton is one of the calanques cut into the white limestone at the southern edge of Marseille, walked into from the Luminy campus, with a rock islet ten metres offshore called the Rocher du Torpilleur because it looks like a warship. Peaks of 4,000 walkers and swimmers a day were eroding the ground, so since 26 June 2022 the national park has run a free online booking system through the peak weeks, for Sugiton and the neighbouring calanque des Pierres Tombées, with 400 permits a day.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk in from Luminy on the waymarked path over the col de Sugiton — about an hour, and steep from the col down to the water, which is the part you will feel on the way back up
2
of 4
Swim off the rocks and find out why the calanque is called rafrège cuou in Provençal — the water comes up cold here even at the height of summer
3
of 4
Climb to the belvedere above the calanque, look down on the islet ten metres off the shore, and decide which of its two names fits — the Rocher du Torpilleur, for a warship, or Le Cygne, for a swan on the water
4
of 4
Follow the red-waymarked path over the cap Sugiton to Morgiou, and from the cliffs there pick out the Triperie inlet on the headland towards Sormiou, where the entrance to the painted grotte Cosquer lies thirty-seven metres under the sea

Before you go
Through the peak weeks you need a free booking to walk in: in 2026 that is 20 and 21 June, every day from 27 June to 30 August, and 5, 6, 12 and 13 September. Bookings open three days ahead at 9am and close at 6pm the day before, five people to a booking, and you need the QR code with you. Outside those dates no booking is needed. The Office national des forêts can close the paths outright on high fire-risk days, so check the day's risk level before driving to Luminy.
