The Corniche Basque: Flysch Cliffs Between Socoa and Hendaye
225 + 100 XP
The Corniche Basque is a protected stretch of 445 hectares on the communes of Ciboure, Urrugne and Hendaye, where the cliffs run six kilometres from the port of Socoa to Hendaye beach. They are built of flysch — rock laid down in thin alternating beds and then tilted on end — cut into coves and spurs, with pasture, woodland and vines on top and the RD 912 running along the edge.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Drive the RD912 from where it crosses the Untxin, up onto the pointe de Socoa 24m above the water, then past the cove called the viviers basques, Haizabia, the Abbadia estate and the baie de Lohia down to Hendaye-Plage
2
of 5
Walk the inland alternative over the first line of hills — the historic clifftop path is closed — and from the ridge look down on the tilted flysch beds and the coves cut into them, as far as the Maison de la Corniche at Asporotsttipi where the path onto the Abbadia estate begins
3
of 5
Walk the path across the 65 hectares of the Domaine d'Abbadia, passing its three houses — Asporotsttipi, Nekatoenea and Larretxea — and climb to the château-observatoire on top of it, the house Antoine d'Abbadie commissioned from Viollet-le-Duc in 1864 after his years in Ethiopia
4
of 5
Take binoculars and look one to two kilometres straight out from the corniche for the Belharra reef, a shoal 14 to 18 m down that throws up waves of up to 20 m on a big winter swell — on the days it works, this is where people come to watch the surfers on it
5
of 5
Finish on the beach at Hendaye and walk back out to the pointe Sainte-Anne to find the concrete the German army left when it built the Corniche into the Atlantic Wall — the eastern end of a line of works that runs all the way back to the pointe de Socoa

Before you go
The corniche road, the clifftop path and the Domaine d'Abbadia are open land and free in any season. The Maison de la Corniche basque at Asporotsttipi, which is where the flysch is explained, takes its annual closure from 5 to 20 January and otherwise opens Wednesday to Saturday only through the winter, 10am to midday and 2pm to 5pm, going to seven days a week from 1 July to 30 September. The clifftop is actively eroding and the path is diverted inland in places after a fall, so keep behind the fencing and do not go down to the flysch platforms on a rising tide.
The corniche road is closed preventively in heavy swell or heavy rain and only reopened once the cliff has been checked, and the carriageway is narrowed where the erosion risk is worst, including at the RD912-RD913 roundabout, which is monitored around the clock — the whole historic line of the road is written off for 2043. Check locally before you drive it in an Atlantic storm, and do not count on turning a long motorhome round on the narrowed sections. The clifftop coastal path has been closed to walkers since 2021 and the wardens of the Domaine d'Abbadia enforce the restrictions there, so take the signed inland route and stay behind the fencing.
