Uzerche: The Pearl of the Limousin in a Loop of the Vézère
200 + 100 XP
Uzerche is built on a rocky spur at 342m inside a meander of the Vézère, a site so picturesque that the English traveller Arthur Young called it the Pearl of the Limousin in 1787, and it has been one of the hundred Plus Beaux Détours de France since 2010. Of its Benedictine abbey only the church of Saint-Pierre remains, a landmark of Limousin Romanesque, with the crypt of the Holy Bodies that held the relics of saints Léon and Coronat, two Breton bishops venerated by pilgrims to Santiago. The nobility left so many turreted houses that Young coined a second line about the place — whoever has a house at Uzerche has a castle in the Limousin — and of the medieval town gates only the Porte Bécharie survives intact.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Go down into the crypt of the Holy Bodies under the church of Saint-Pierre, where the relics of the two Breton bishops, saint Léon and saint Coronat, drew the Compostela pilgrims, then come back up into the church — all that the vicomte de Turenne's Huguenots left of the abbey when they sacked it in 1575
2
of 4
Walk the rue de la Justice and count the three towers on the front of the hôtel du Sénéchal, said locally to stand for the rights of high, middle and low justice, then find the two pepper-pot towers of the Château Pontier, the consuls' house, and the Maison Eyssartier, home of the apothecary who sold the arsenic in the Lafarge poisoning case
3
of 4
Walk through the Porte Bécharie, the one town gate kept intact, and stop under the arch to look up at the carved niche above the vault, with its modern statue of the Virgin in it
4
of 4
Walk out onto the Pont Turgot, finished in 1753 to link the Sainte-Eulalie suburb to the old town, and look back up at the turreted houses on the spur — then pick out the terraced kitchen gardens that step all the way from the top of the rock down to the banks of the Vézère, and are still worked

Before you go
The old town sits on top of the rock and its spine is still one steep, twisting street lined with 15th and 16th-century houses — park below, by the Vézère or on the Village étape signed parking off the A20, and walk up. Uzerche has held the Village étape label since 1996, so services for travellers are on the main road rather than in the old town. The crypt under Saint-Pierre is not always open on its own: ask at the tourist office about access and guided visits before you climb.
