La Boulaye: The Temple of the Thousand Buddhas in the Hills of the Arroux

At La Boulaye, in Saône-et-Loire, the Temple of the Thousand Buddhas was inaugurated on 22 August 1987 as the first Himalayan temple in Europe, built on the plan of Samyé, the first temple raised in Tibet, but decorated in Bhutanese style and painted inside from floor to ceiling. The château of La Boulaye, owned by the Schneider family, ironmasters of Le Creusot, until 1936, now provides lodgings for the temple, and in the village the church of Sainte-Madeleine was built in 1903-1905 with money from Charles-Prosper-Eugène Schneider, deputy for Saône-et-Loire and heir to the château.

Required Activities

1

of 4

In the temple, stand in front of the three monumental figures on the end wall — Sakyamuni Buddha seven metres high in the centre, Green Tara to the right, Guru Rinpoche to the left — then look up and count the six painted mandalas on the ceiling, and walk the esplanade outside past its ring of thirty-six small stupas

2

of 4

Walk the grounds between the temple on the Plaige estate and the former Schneider château of La Boulaye, now the guest lodgings, and on the way turn the prayer wheel clockwise — the way it is meant to go — and find the Temple of Lights, the small glazed building where the butter lamps and candles are offered

3

of 4

Go into the church of Sainte-Madeleine in the village, built in 1903-1905 at the expense of the Le Creusot ironmaster who owned the château up the road, and look for the Schneider name and arms on what the family paid for inside it

4

of 4

Walk out to the feudal motte and fortified house of La Roche-au-Bazot, which belonged to Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the dukes of Burgundy and the man who founded the Hôtel-Dieu at Beaune, and pick the mound out of the field pattern around it

Before you go

This is a working Buddhist retreat centre, not a museum, and it closes for the whole of January. Visits run every afternoon, 2pm to 5.30pm, with mornings added in July and August (10am to noon and 2pm to 6pm); the guided visit leaves at 3pm, daily in July and August and in zone A school holidays, and at weekends only the rest of the year. The great hall is kept for teaching and practice, so keep quiet and shoeless where asked. The park and the shop are free. The approach lanes from Toulon-sur-Arroux and Saint-Léger-sous-Beuvray are narrow for a long motorhome.
