Nontron: The Oldest Folding Knife in France
200 + 100 XP
Nontron, in the Périgord Vert, is known for its cutlers: the craft probably goes back to the Middle Ages, though it is first recorded in 1653. The best-known Nontron knife is a hand-made folding pocket knife with a pyrographed boxwood handle and a brass ferrule, the oldest folding knife in France, and since 1996 a Fête du Couteau has been held each year on a weekend in August.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Buy the classic Nontron from a cutler in the town — the number 25 folding pocket knife, pyrographed boxwood handle and brass ferrule — and before you pay, turn the ferrule to lock the blade open and shut, the catch Guillaume Petit put on the Nontron pattern in 1815
2
of 4
Go into the 18th-century château of Nontron, the only building in the Dordogne picked for the loto du patrimoine in 2020, and find the exhibition room where the Pôle expérimental des métiers d'art shows what the craftspeople of the Nontronnais are making now, knives among it
3
of 4
Come for the Fête du Couteau at the start of August, the third biggest knife show in France after Paris and Thiers, and work the stands of the hundred or so cutlers to compare a Nontron, a Laguiole and an Opinel in the hand before you choose
4
of 4
Find the church of Notre-Dame-des-Ronces, built over a spring in 1872 and 1873 to Jules Mandin's plans, and look up at the organ in it — the one the parish bought second-hand from the cathedral of Saint-Front at Périgueux

Before you go
The Fête du Couteau is held on a weekend at the start of August.
The Fête du Couteau is a single weekend at the start of August — the 30th edition fell on 1 and 2 August 2026 — and it draws several thousand people into a town of a few thousand, so book a pitch well ahead or come on another weekend. Outside it the cutlers keep ordinary small-town hours, shutting at midday and on Sunday and Monday, and the exhibition room in the château has hours of its own, so check with the Pôle expérimental des métiers d'art before counting on getting in.
