Rambouillet: The Château Where François I Died, the Queen's Dairy and the Bergerie

The château of Rambouillet, a former royal, imperial and presidential residence set in a park of 980 hectares within the forest of Rambouillet, is where François I died on 31 March 1547, by tradition in the high room of the great tower that still stands; it hosted the first G6 summit in 1975 and has been open to visitors under the Centre des monuments nationaux since 2009. In 1779 the duc de Penthièvre crossed the park with canals forming six islands and set follies among them, and had the Chaumière aux Coquillages built for his daughter-in-law the princesse de Lamballe. To make Marie-Antoinette like the estate Louis XVI had a dairy built in secret from 1785, inaugurated in June 1787, and the Bergerie nationale was founded in 1786 around a flock walked from Spain that became the Rambouillet merino breed.

Required Activities

1

of 4

In the château, find the 16th-century salle des Marbres — the old guardroom, its walls and floor patterned in white Pyrenean, bleu turquin and red Languedoc marble — then go on into the crenellated tour François Ier, where tradition puts the king's death on 31 March 1547 and where the bedroom for visiting heads of state was later installed

2

of 4

Walk out to the Laiterie de la Reine, a small neoclassical temple: stand in the rotunda lit only from the dome overhead, then go through to the gallery and find the grotto at the end of it, with Pierre Julien's 1787 statue of the nymph Amalthea and her goat

3

of 4

Go inside the Chaumière aux Coquillages — thatched like a cottage outside, lined with marble, shells and mother-of-pearl inside — and find the small second room hidden behind the two concealed doors either side of the chimneypiece, which once held the 18th-century automata that were stolen

4

of 4

Follow the visitor circuit at the Bergerie nationale and stand at the pens of the Rambouillet merino, the only flock of the breed left in France, descended from the 334 ewes, 42 rams and 7 leading wethers that Spanish shepherds walked here from near Segovia in 1786

Before you go

The château, the Laiterie de la Reine and the Chaumière aux coquillages are all shut on Tuesdays and on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. The Chaumière opens afternoons only all year, and from 1 October to 31 March so does the Laiterie — do the château in the morning and the two follies after 2pm, not the other way round. The follies are a walk out into the park from the château, and the Bergerie nationale is a separate paid farm visit with its own hours, so ring it before you go.
